East London - A springboard for building Respect
Commenting on Respect's vote in the City and East London constituency in the London Assembly elections, George Galloway MP said following a meeting of the party’s co-ordinating committee last night:
"It was an extraordinary result – especially under the circumstances of a Tory surge, which produced a counter-reaction from Labour voters. It is of great credit to our campaign team – led by Abdul Khaliq Mian and Sabia Kamali – our candidate Cllr Hanif Abdulmuhit and all those who came to help us.
"Congratulations to everyone who took part in the campaign.
"We not only consolidated our vote in the City and East London constituency – which spans from Tower Hill to Dagenham – but we increased it by 37 percent. This is at the same time as the Labour vote surging in response to the threat to Ken Livingstone.
"One very welcome consequence of our result is that it is Respect – a multiracial, anti-racist party – that is the third party of City and East (second in the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Newham) and not the fascists of the BNP.
"The work of our activists in East London has ensured that unlike the meltdown of Labour 30 years ago in the area, the far right are not the main beneficiaries.
"We have had a series of discussions over the last couple of days to analyse the results and plan for the future. We are looking to build on the result directly, particularly in target wards and parliamentary seats which will be contested in two years time. But we are also looking to launch a series of initiatives with others in the broader movement.
"The aim is clear: to draw clear lines of division between us in the East End and Boris Johnson in the City Hall. We also want further initiatives that deepen the defence of multiculturalism and the campaign against racism. That needs to extend further and further east.
"In all of this the tremendous vote achieved in City and East provides a springboard for building the progressive movement and Respect over the coming years."

The local and London elections have been bad for the left and for progressive voters everywhere. The backlash against the Brown government, which many now feel has betrayed them on the economic and social fundamentals, has pushed Labour's share of the vote below the Liberal Democrats nationally.
In London, Johnson is now mayor, although the final margin after second preferences was lower than many predicted. Much worse, the BNP got a first seat on the Assembly. The Liberal Democrats also had a bad day in London, with their vote down substantially and it was a pretty mixed picture…

Three Bengali community channels face the possibility of closure. Why?
Because the Liberal Democrats used their authority to encourage these

Somalia is experiencing the worst crisis in 15 years, 3586 civilian deaths including infants, children, women and the elderly, and the toll rising by the day. Rape, fear, displacement, misery and suffering on an enormous scale while the Western governments stand by and watch.
