Galloway slams post office closures |
George Galloway has slammed the decision by the Royal Mail Group to
ride roughshod over objections from residents, councillors, the
council and business to the closure of five post offices in Tower
Hamlets.
"This is the direct product of the government's policy of
privatisation. Jim Fitzpatrick, who was the minister originally
responsible for this closure programme and still takes the
government's shiiling for his obedience, should be utterly ashamed of
himself and of this regime which still dares to call itself Labour.
"People are going to lose their jobs and the most vulnerable residents
in our borough are going to lose a vital service. And all because this
is a government which puts profit and greed above service and need.
"And it's no good the former council leader Denise Jones shedding
crocodile tears. The only reason to vote for a Labour council is the
claim that the government will listen to its own people. Now we have
proof positive that this government listens to no-one.
"The voters who voted Labour in such numbers in Tower Hamlets just a
few days ago will be bitterly disappointed. Every avenue must still be
pursued to try to get Royal Mail and this rotten government to see
sense."
The five post offices to close are Whitechapel,
Quarterdeck, Devons Road, Watney Market and Heylyn Square. The post
offices lie in the heart of communities across Tower Hamlets. |
