Message of solidarity to Michael Gavan |
Newham Council workers in Unison will be striking for 24 hours on Thursday, 13 December, following the disgraceful sacking of Unison activist and Respect member Michael Gavan.
In a solidarity statement to Michael and his Unison colleagues, Respect MP George Galloway said, “I am utterly appalled at Michael Gavan’s sacking at the hands of Sir Robin Wales’s regime in Newham.
“Michael is a dedicated trade unionist who has always stood up for his members the people of Newham. He has always been there for you, now you need to be there for him.
“Going on strike is never easy – but whatever the bullying and the blandishments it is vital that you stand shoulder to shoulder with Michael and your union today.
“If they can get away with sacking him, who will be left to stand up for you? Everyone will feel under management’s thumb. This is about Michael and your union rights.
“I’ve been proud to share a platform with Michael Gavan in the past and look forward to doing so in the future – with him back where he should be, as the chair of Newham Unison.”
